SURGERY TECH I - HOI-OPERATING ROOM

The Surgical Tech maintains a sterile environment throughout surgical procedures. Protects oneself and others by following rules and regulations regarding sharps, hazardous materials, and patient body fluids. Practices safe handling of instrumentation between surgeons and other members of the surgical team. Follows the rules of HOI s Code of Conduct. Disposes of all waste in a way which is supported by the rules and regulations of HOI. The Surgical Technician displays and practices a work-style reflecting the mission, vision and values of the Hoag Orthopedic Institute. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures, including the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance.

Essential Functions

  • Participates as member the team under direct supervision of an RN/Charge Nurse/Control Desk Manager/ Clinical Manager.
  • Functions in the role of scrub/assist person and assisting physician and/or RN.
  • Responsible for direct and indirect care of patients.
  • Assists with maintenance, care of instruments, supplies and equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and steps for routine or complex procedures.
  • Describes, utilizes and monitors clean/sterile technique used in a procedural setting.
  • Identifies, gathers, and prepares instrument and equipment and specialty items for all procedures in a timely manner according to preference card.
  • Notifies appropriate person to assure complete inventory for all items used and stocked in procedure/ operating room.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows all policies and procedures. Assists the team with procedure by setting up and assuring proper function of clean/sterile instruments/equipment
  • Collaborates with the other members of the team to provide care.
  • Assists the team in appropriate transport/transfer/positioning of patient.
  • Practices appropriate initiation and maintenance of sponge, needle and miscellaneous item counts according to policy, including appropriate signatures.

  • Appropriately identifies specimen to nurse
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Clinical Care:
Ensure patient care is delivered and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional regulatory standards. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate population as outlined in the job description and competencies.

Education, Training and Experience

Required:
Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control, ability to follow instructions, knowledge of age of population served, and additional skills and knowledge of equipment related to the surgical/procedural environment. Successful completion an accredited Surgical Scrub Technician program or equivalent military medical core training. Certification preferred.

Preferred:
A minimum of 1-year recent OR experience preferred.

Skills or Other Qualifications

Required:
Excellent communication skills; customer focused; excellent attention to detail; able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; able to work in a team environment. Proven excellent customer service skills, including the ability to progressively probe, analyze, identify root causes of problems, provide practical solutions, and negotiate resolutions. Solid computer technical skills required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) and additional Organizational systems (Affinity, SMS, and PACS). Ability to perform general diagnostic Radiology procedures under the supervision of the Technical Supervisor.

Preferred:
Qualified bilingual or multilingual candidates. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, plus healthcare database systems.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
